The Holidays at Mount Vernon. 9 am - 4 pm. Open both Christmas and New Year's Day! See the Mansion adorned simply with fresh greenery, hear stories about how George and Martha Washington celebrated the holidays at Mount Vernon and take home Martha Washington's "Great Cake" recipe. Visitors are also invited to tour the third floor of the Mansion - rarely open to the public. Bull Run Festival of Lights. Come and join us for the 2008 Bull Run Festival of Lights. It is a 2.5 mile light show that ends at the Winter Wonderland Holiday Village. At this holiday extravaganza there will be food, Pictures with Santa, a walk through light show, animated holiday tree, carnival rides, holiday crafts, fire rings to sings songs around and much more. Twelfth Night Tea at Sully Historic Site 1 pm - 3 pm. 3650 Historic Sully Way, Chantilly. Ladies and gentlemen, 8 yrs. and up sip afternoon tea and make a period craft to take home. Twelfth Night (the twelfth day of Christmas) was the traditional end of the holiday season in the 18th and early 19th centuries. This was a time for weddings, balls and parties. House tour included. Livable Landscapes 1:30 pm - 3 pm. World landscapes are in rapid transition through space and time, purpose and palette, meaning and motivation. Using worldwide examples of designed spaces and emergent ecologies, Rick Darke outlines and illustrates strategies for creating private gardens and shared landscapes that celebrate both cultural and biological diversity. He's addressed audiences around the globe. His work has been featured on National Public Radio and is reflected in his many books including The American Woodland Garden: Capturing the Spirit of the Deciduous Forest and his latest, The Encyclopedia of Grasses for Livable Landscapes, which includes over 1,000 photos of grasses in world landscapes. Fairfax Symphony Orchestra Presents Daniel Meyer, Conductor Finalist. While the nation welcomes its new president, the Fairfax Symphony is still searching for its new music director. On inauguration weekend, the FSO will present Daniel Meyer, the exciting resident conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony. The orchestra will play Bernstein's Three Dance Episodes from "On the Town," Brahms' Symphony No. 1, and Bruch's Violin Concerto with Jennifer Frautschi, guest artist, on the violin. At 36, Meyer is recognized as one of the top directors of his generation, having worked with Manfred Honeck, Mariss Jansons, Sir Andrew Davis, and Charles Dutoit, led the Pittsburgh Symphony on tour, and conducted performances with Pinchas Zukerman, Sarah Chang, and Marvin Hamlisch as soloists. The Fairfax Symphony has selected Meyer as one of its 6 finalists for music director out of 249 applicants. Audience members have the ability to provide feedback after the concert. Reston's 24th Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration for the Youth and Commemorative March 9 am - 2 pm. Activities include children's arts & crafts, a host of community service projects and workshops on hot issues such as women & minorities in politics, affordable housing & homelessness, and non-violent conflict resolution. All activities will be based on the history of Dr. King and the Civil Rights Movement. Commemorative March will begin at Southgate Community Center and end at Reston Community Center.
