4th of July at the National Archives

The National Archives celebrates the 4th of July with special family programming celebrating the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Visit the National Archives Building for this special birthday party from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. The celebration will include patriotic music, a dramatic reading of the Declaration by historical reenactors and free family activities and entertainment for all ages.

4th of July Fireworks on the National Mall

The fireworks are launched from the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool and light up the sky over the Washington Monument. Here are some of the best places to view the fireworks:

A Capitol Fourth Concert

Times: 8 - 9:30 p.m. (Admittance begins at 3 p.m.)
A 4th of July tradition in the nation's capital includes a live concert by the National Symphony Orchestra and several pop artists performing patriotic music on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol Building. The concert and show is followed by a spectacular display of fireworks over the Washington Monument. The concert is free and open to the public. No tickets are necessary. The annual event is broadcast live on PBS with a repeat airing at 9:30-11:00 p.m. The concert will also be broadcast over National Public Radio on WAMU - 88.5 FM.

An American Celebration at Mount Vernon

The Sons of the American Revolution host a wreathlaying ceremony at Washington's tomb where visitors are invited to lay a carnation.

The City of Fairfax Band starts the show at 7pm followed by welcome remarks and a presentation of awards by the City Mayor at 8pm.   Musical acts will follow the Mayor leading up to 9:20 p.m. for one of the regions best fireworks displays.  You can tune your radio to 1650 am at 9 p.m. to enjoy the City of Fairfax 4th July fireworks display in all its musical splendor. The music that will be choreographed to the fireworks display will be broadcast live on the City 1650 am.

Fort Belvoir Fourth of July Freedom Fest

There will be food and refreshments served by local vendors, and Independence Day memorabilia for sale.  A 30-minute fireworks display will begin at 9:30 p.m., and is slated to be launched from the North Post softball field.

Herndon Independence Day Celebration & Concert

Join the Town of Herndon on Saturday, July 4, for a great family-fun event featuring a community-wide kick-ball game, small rides, bounce houses, arts & crafts activities, bingo and more. There is a small charge for some activities. The event will take place around the Herndon Community Center, 814 Ferndale Ave and Bready Park starting at 6:30 PM. At 7:30 PM our headline entertainment, Mike Aiken, will get the crowds up and dancing.  Throughout the evening, festive food, ranging from Hot Dogs and Hamburgers to Funnel Cakes and Cotton Candy will be on sale! Our fabulous fireworks show is choreographed to music and starts at 9:30 PM.

Historic Alexandria Waterfront Kayak Tour

Reservations are REQUIRED and can be made until 4:30pm the day before the trip.  Seats are only reserved upon confirmation from NVCT.  Dress for the weather & activity.  A hat with a brim, sunglasses, sunblock, and water are essential.  Many people also like to bring a light snack, binoculars, and/or a camera.  Wear clothes and shoes that can get wet.  If you have any questions prior to the trip call or e-mail the trip leader.  Saturday morning please call the trip leader at the number they will provide. Trips may be cancelled due to weather, including high winds and cooler-than-average temperatures.  If there are any announcements the trip leader will call and/or e-mail everyone, and will post the information on the NVCT website. We can take participants 16 and older.  No experience required-we provide training and all equipment.  Participants can bring their own boats but we are not able to offer a reduced fee. Tours are available at any time for Private Groups and Corporate Outings-contact Whitney Bailey or Andrew Spence for more information!

Independence Day Parade

Washington, DC's 4th of July Parade features marching bands, military and specialty units, floats, and VIP's. The parade draws a large crowd, so plan to arrive early to stake out a good viewing spot.

Lake Fairfax Park 4th of July Celebration

At Lake Fairfax Park in Reston the fun begins at 7 a.m.  Visitors can picnic in the park, or purchase tickets for The Water Mine Swimmin' Hole, open 10 a.m. until 8 p.m.  Vendors will offer a wide variety of food for purchase throughout the celebration, and children will find a moon bounce, dunk tank and an obstacle course to amuse them.  Fireworks begin at approximately 9:15 p.m.  Celebrants are encouraged to come early as parking is limited.

2. Compete in one of three preliminary rounds on July 14, 15, and 16. Eight bands compete per night. Two winners per night win $200 each and move on to the finals.

What is a studio challenge? Imagine something like that crazy cooking show where the "chairman of the culinary academy" unveils a secret ingredient and challenges chefs to do their best. We do exactly the same kind of thing, but we take turns (nobody should have as much power as the chairman) picking and unveiling the secret inspiration. Participants get a set amount of time to work on their art, and at the end we submit them to commentary by a silly actress, a member of the lower house, and a fortune teller. Seriously, we'll provide interesting challenges, and you'll get to stretch your creativity in ways you haven't thought of.

July has always been a time of celebration at George Washington's farm as it marks the beginning of the wheat harvest season. To celebrate Washington the farmer, Mount Vernon's farm staff kick-off the season on the Fourth of July with wheat-treading demonstrations at the George Washington: Pioneer Farmer site. Costumed staff lead Mount Vernon's horses as they tread wheat in the 16-sided barn at 10:30 a.m., 11:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m., and 3:00 p.m. Visitors witness Washington's innovative treading process and learn first-hand how Washington separated grain from straw. Wheat-Treading Demonstrations are included in regular Estate admission
