A 4th of July tradition in the nation's capital includes a live concert by the National Symphony Orchestra and several pop artists performing patriotic music on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol Building. 2. Compete in one of three preliminary rounds on July 14, 15, and 16. Eight bands compete per night. Two winners per night win $200 each and move on to the finals.
3. Six bands compete in the finals on Friday August 14th.

What is a studio challenge? Imagine something like that crazy cooking show where the "chairman of the culinary academy" unveils a secret ingredient and challenges chefs to do their best. We do exactly the same kind of thing, but we take turns (nobody should have as much power as the chairman) picking and unveiling the secret inspiration. Participants get a set amount of time to work on their art, and at the end we submit them to commentary by a silly actress, a member of the lower house, and a fortune teller. Seriously, we'll provide interesting challenges, and you'll get to stretch your creativity in ways you haven't thought of.

Children's Play Group Tuesdays and Fridays, 9 a.m.–11 a.m. Preschool children and their parents and/or guardians are invited to participate in MCC’s Co-op Play Group. The Center provides a free space for you and your preschooler to interact with other parents and children in the area on every Tuesday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Caregivers must accompany children, as no staff supervision is provided. July has always been a time of celebration at George Washington's farm as it marks the beginning of the wheat harvest season. To celebrate Washington the farmer, Mount Vernon's farm staff kick-off the season on the Fourth of July with wheat-treading demonstrations at the George Washington: Pioneer Farmer site. Costumed staff lead Mount Vernon's horses as they tread wheat in the 16-sided barn at 10:30 a.m., 11:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m., and 3:00 p.m. Visitors witness Washington's innovative treading process and learn first-hand how Washington separated grain from straw. Wheat-Treading Demonstrations are included in regular Estate admission
